Sunday Reflections
Fun, literary, work November 11th, 2007Like everyone else, I enjoy kicking back on Sundays, reading the paper, puttering around and generally being lazy. It helps to take the downtime and rejuvenate my spirit before the craziness of another week begins.
I don’t recall where I read the following passage, but I jotted it down and tacked it up on my refrigerator, reading it on Sundays or whenever I feel the need for calm. Be sure to read it slowly and carefully, visualizing it for the greatest benefit.
Picture yourself near a stream. Birds are softly chirping in the crisp, cool mountain air. Nothing can bother you here. No one knows this secret place. You are in total seclusion from that place called “the world.” The soothing sound of a gentle waterfall fills the air with a cascade of serenity. The water is clear. You can easily make
out the face of the person whose head you’re holding under the water.

I love it. Especially the O. Henry ending.

Yeah, Rob. You’ve been here before. You probably knew I’d veer off somewhere 🙂

When I started reading it, I did think of Seinfeld and hoped it employed their mantra of “No hugging, no learning.”
Happily, I can say it complied to the mantra. Good job Kathy! Just what I needed.

CG — Oh, please. We all know hugging and learning are overrated. I would never, EVER freak people out in the Junk Drawer by throwing in a Dr. Phil-ism. No one will find help for their problems here, rest assured.

Very nice. Sounds like Jack Handey-work to me.

Well, my counselor did say to use a script when meditating…may I?

Never read your blog before so I was assuming this was ending pretty much how it began…I was having a hard time focusing! Until the end!!! Then I could see it clearly! I had just been thinking, “How do people actually DO this? Trying to picture this setting doesn’t do anything to me!” Then, it suddenly DID!!! 🙂

@ Jeff — It does sound like Jack Handey. Thanks for the link. I learned he is responsible for “Toonces the Driving Cat,” one of my all-time favorite SNL sketches.
@ Gale — Whatever helps!
@ Darla – Glad you hung in there til the end. Wasn’t it worth it?

Heh. I thought you’d gone all soft and philosophical on us. Glad to see that’s not the case!

He also was responsible for Unfrozen Cave Man Lawyer – one of MY favorite SNL skits of all time. I love the fact that they have a survey on his web site that asks if he is real or not, and the #1 most clicked response (with 4235 votes) was “I had sex with him.”
Of cousre he’s no Wilt Chamberlin, but still…

@ JD — Don’t worry. I’ll never get deep in this blog. I prefer to keep things shallow and meaningless.
@ Jeff — Yea, that was an interesting multiple choice item.
I see he also created Happy Fun Ball. What a classic! “Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball.” I miss when SNL used to be good. That’s probably the most controversial thing I’ve said in this blog. Anyone care to argue that it’s actually good right now?

That you’re a SNL fan explains a lot. I haven’t watched SNL in years because it steadily was less and less relevant, the satire just wasn’t as good as it once was. I’m heading over to recommend “Sunday Reflections” to a friend, she really needs it.

MoonS — “Was” an SNL fan. I don’t know why I keep recording it. I fast-forward through almost all of it except for Weekend Update. I keep watching because I think someday they’ll have a stroke of genius and get funny again. I wanna be there if it happens.

Well, since yesterday was a busy one with laundry, chili making and moving a freezer, TODAY is my chill-out day. I am just reding blogs and vegging out on this holiday day (for Canadians, it was our Remembrance Day yesterday, and since I work in healthcare, we get today off). We all need days like this sometimes….at least that’s what I keep telling myself as I waste the day away.
