This is Killing Me
contests, Fun, Windy April 9th, 2008As you all know, lots of stuff bothers me. What’s killing me now? This bag.
It got caught in a tree outside my office almost three weeks ago. I can’t help but notice it every time I pass a window that faces it. When I point it out to others, expecting shock horror, I just get “Yeah? It’s a bag in a tree.”
OK, so I’ll admit that I’m the only one in my building who’s bothered by this. I’m going to be seeing it for days, weeks and months to come, so we might as well have some fun with it.ย I’ve decided to turn this into a little contest.
If you can guess closest to the day the bag escapes its branchy prison, you’ll win a prize! Simply leave the date in the comments box. You must give an exact date (month, day and year — yes, year, because it could be that long). The prize will be a set of magnets or mousepad with the Junk Drawer logo on it (your choice).
p.s. To my sister, Ann of the Shampoo Bag, the bag is from your favoritist store in the whole wide world! Another reason to hate “The Big W.”
Addendum, 4/18: If you’re interested in knowing how the bag got here, check out the back story over here. Just a warning — it’s heartbreaking.
Stumble it!

May 1st, 2008 at 10:13 pm
June the 7th, 2008. That’s the day the bag will fall from it’s arbolic prison and promptly wrap itself around on Kathy Frederick’s ankle, as she wanders by on her morning break.
Alas.

Peg@Lehigh — Date noted. And wouldn’t that be a fine Independence Day for our little bag?!
Daniel Cox — Funny! And don’t laugh. If I’m around when it gets down, I’m going to keep it!
DrowseyMonkey — You have no idea. I’ll hope it comes down on your birthday, but honestly, I think it’s going to be up there into 2009. Maybe your next birthday?
May 2nd, 2008 at 5:50 am
Oh man! I can so relate. I have a big window in my livingroom and I’m pretty much a couch potato who sits with the tv on, computer in lap and watches everything that goes on outside those windows. Last summer there was a bag way up in the tree of the house across the street. But that old man over there, he is SO fastidious with his yard and that bag wasn’t there for more than a few days.
Ok so…my guess is going to be Sept. 15, 2008

Lori — I used to have a neighbor like that. I’m certain he couldn’t tolerate looking at a bag in a tree for more than two days. He’d lose sleep over it until it was out. Your guess is noted!
May 20th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Lori- You sound like me. I also sit on my chaise lounge, computer in lap, tv on, and watch outside my patio door.
My guess is October 19, 2008.

ann of the shampoo bag — I’m there right now. Is there anything better?
June 12th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Well, here’s my guess…July 4, 2008 4:05 p.m.
Independence day after all. ๐

castocreations — That’s an appropriate guess, but don’t count on it. We looked again today, and the bag is exactly where it was the day it got stuck. It ain’t movin’.

Rattln Along — You’re right. Now that we’re over 100 days in the tree, it’s time. I’ll get one next week. Although, it looks pretty much as it did before, only the tree is sagging a little. I think debris is collecting in the bottom of the bag.

i guess feb. 3, 2009
my birthday will bring very good news to your sanity
July 14th, 2008 at 3:51 am
brooke — I’m not sure I can take any new guesses, to be fair to everyone who already guessed. Besides, it’ll probably be there longer than that.
September 24th, 2008 at 11:08 am
After 185 days, it is obvious to me that this is not a bag at all but a piece of sophisticated spy equipment planted by a suspicious government agency. If your blog ceases publication mysteriously… we will all know the true story. Good luck.

Is that damn thing STILL hanging around? I might have to do something about it. I bet if the tree burned, the bag would come free…

Daniel Cox — Yes, the damn thing is still there. I looked at it today and it’s as stuck as it ever was. Thinking about taking another photo for the blog. The leaves are turning a beautiful shade of red and the bag makes a nice accessory for fall. Well, not really.
October 16th, 2008 at 8:59 am
Kathy – Get outta here! That bag is STILL there?!!! NO WAY!

Dec 31, 2008 – surely it will be before that!
October 26th, 2008 at 8:03 am
Guitar Lessons — I worried about it yesterday. We had some very strong gusts that knocked over some of my patio furniture. I realize how insane it is for me to think of the bag when a storm rolls through. But I’ve learned to live with it. It won’t come out by the end of the year, I can almost guarantee it. Windy is hanging on for dear life!
November 10th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
This is too funny. There is a bag in the tree in our front yard and it has been there since April or May as well. It probably flew up there from our neighbor’s house. We always get their trash. Their yard is higher up than ours so the trash they leave in the yard always ends up in our yard, including leaves and beer bottles. I never bothered to see what kind of bag it is, though, and it’s up too high for hubby or me to get to it. It bothers me too, so I empathize with you. I don’t think it’s going to fly away on its own. We’ve had some pretty windy days here and the darn thing is still hanging on. I think the wind just helps it to get a tighter grip around that limb. I think human intervention will be required! ๐
Tamika
November 16th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Tamika — You have my deepest sympathies. I think I would go nuts if it was a bag I could see every day at home. I’m lucky that the tree at work is not right outside my window, so I only have to see it when I want to. Yeah, I know. The wind barely helps. All it’s good for is getting the darn things stuck up there!

Alan — Doubtful. The top part of the bag is now wrapped around a branch about ten times. My guess is it’ll only come down in shreds of its former self.
December 31st, 2008 at 7:52 pm
That is crazy that the bag has been there for so long. Bags get stuck in the trees in my back yard all the time but none of them stick around for very long.

Military Wife — This bag is destined to stay there until she shreds to pieces. And I’m sure some of it will stay wrapped around branches longer than that.

Second, March 3, 2010.

I have been equally annoyed by a bag in the tree across from my apartment. Grrrrr… hopefully it’s just a stray bag that escaped accidentally somewhere, those sorts of things happen. I just hope it wasn’t because someone just tossed it out of their car or something.

Erinj1976 — Why thank you! Do you have a blog? I see you linked to your Stumble page.
bugsy — I know how frustrating it is. Believe me. I look at the bag every week day. She looks pretty ragged now. In fact, it’s possible she has split in two and one of her halves is missing. I need a better look, but I’m never keen on crawling out on the roof, which is where I get the best shot.
January 7th, 2009 at 1:12 am
Wow, that’s one persistent bag…I’ll through my hat into the ring and say:

January 11th, 2009 at 5:29 am
Dr Z Amps — It’s looking really bad. I think I’m due for another update. Sometimes it looks like only half the bag remains, other times it’s all there. Depends on the weather and how soaked it is.
January 14th, 2009 at 11:10 am
Since only half the bag is there I’m going to only make half a guess. March
Carla’s last blog post..Weโre ok, thanks for asking.
January 16th, 2009 at 6:21 am
Carla — I’m thinking of posting again about the bag. It’ll probably be a video, so we can really determine how much is left of it. It requires I stand out on the roof of my building, I didn’t get much sleep last night, and it’s like 4 degrees out. Chances I’ll do it today are very slim, but I’d still like to because tomorrow is Day 300 for Windy.
January 24th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Seriously? It’s STILL there? No big wind storms? Blizzards? Can nothing stop the bag? Or half-bag at this point…either way that would make me nuts. I’ll venture a guess…May 11.
EclecticWAHM’s last blog post..Day Twenty-Four – Join My Network

EclecticWAHM — Yep. She’s still there. Looking really ragged, though. I think she’s split in two, but both pieces appear to still be intact. Look for an update at the one year mark. I keep a daily tracker in my sidebar so you can know when it’s coming up.
March 16th, 2009 at 8:23 pm
So I just read that there is a back story to how Windy got stuck.
But Mid-Night Waderers seems to be closed to outsiders. That is stoopid. I remember they were open before !
Can you send me the story ?
March 29th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
I’ll put a nickel down on Aug. 7th, 2009. Now, as it is apparently in two pieces does just one piece have to coem free or both for it to be officially “free” of the tree? If you need a second date for the second half of the bag I’ll go Oct. 21st, 2009…just to cover the bases.

On Monday, August 17th, 2009, the bag will be gone. Sorry for the inconvenience; he does that sometimes. Just parks in any old tree.
June 6th, 2010 at 5:31 pm
Just wondering, is the bag still in the tree?
June 9th, 2010 at 12:05 pm
Yes, Bill. It’s still there. Shreds of it. The top part is wrapped very tightly around the branch and the rest is in strips. I can always see it when the wind blows and the leaves are down.
June 15th, 2010 at 10:28 am
I heard your story on NPR in San Diego yesterday. The old bag looks good for 2 years old and being in the sun with out sun block. Windy, I hope makes it to 3 years!
June 15th, 2010 at 10:30 am
She should be home for the holidays, I will say October 21, 2010
June 24th, 2010 at 9:17 am
I enjoyed your interview on NPR–it’s how I got to this site! For those who think the plastic bag issue is silly, I have news. A friend of mine who is a farmer told me that plastic bags sometimes get blown over the heads of his cattle and suffocate them. So besides trashing out the planet, plastic bags can be lethal. It would be interesting to know how many children are suffocated by them.
