Hi. It’s Windy. Did You Miss Me?
Windy November 6th, 2009As a lot of you know, there was some question about our beloved Windy’s survival over the summer. Over the last few weeks many of her tree’s leaves fell away and I knew it would be soon that we’d either see her or we wouldn’t. I’ve been bracing myself.
A few days ago a colleague at work came bouncing into the office to say she thought she saw a glimpse of her.
Today I got the evidence. She’s looking pretty tattered, but she is most definitely still there.
Let us bow our heads and give thanks.
Behold, Windy! A stripped down version of her former self, but no less loved!

Thank goodness! It wouldn’t be fall without Windy. I hope she gets a new friend this year, one that will hang around.

It looks like an old piece of calamari to me… are you sure that’s windy?

Hooray! Windy is still there. I too was worried we had seen the last of her.

TheSnackHound — “Take these broken wings …?” Yes, that would be another angle on the story. I wish I could get someone, anyone to pick up the story before she’s gone for good.
34milepizza — I wish she would get a friend, too. A brand new bag that would get stuck close enough to her that they could chat a bit. Windy could give the new bag the lowdown on everything.
Michelle Gartner — Calimari. That’s a good one. Yes, she’s looking pretty limp out there. Despite that, I’d recognize her anywhere.
this old man — Two years in March. Make sure you come back around then for an update. There will be another party and another cake, no doubt. Not kidding.
Jessica — We were very worried too. My coworker and I panicked a little today because we couldn’t see her from a certain stairwell. But then we found her and calmed ourselves down. This winter will be very hard on Windy. Pray very hard she survives.

I was thinking more of “Windy” by the Association…
Who’s peeking out from under a stairway
Calling a name that’s lighter than air
Who’s bending down to give me a rainbow
Everyone knows it’s Windy
Who’s tripping down the streets of the city
Smiling at everybody she sees
Who’s reaching out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it’s Windy
And Windy has stormy eyes
That flash at the sound of lies
And Windy has wings to fly
Above the clouds, above the clouds
Who’s tripping down the streets of the city
Smiling at everybody she sees
Who’s reaching out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it’s Windy

Ok, I think I might be the first person to add to this thread who doesn’t know Windy personally – I’m in Portland, OR and my boyfriend sent me a link to the NPR story today. I wondered why he would send me a story about plastic bags (I thought it had something to do with takeout containers at a hamburger chain because he misspelled her name)! Anyway, now I know why he sent the story, and after I listened to it, I came and read everything about Windy on your blog. I had to comment on this particular post because the video of Windy with the music was so touching — especially after reading the interview you did with her at the beginning — that I got all choked up when I saw her waving bravely with those fragile, tattered tendrils. You’ve got my tremendous admiration for creating a world where you can make people cry over something that (correction — someONE WHO) originally escaped from Walmart! I think maybe you should add to her name: Windy the Velveteen Baggit. Cheers!

p.s. I COVET your amazing bacon shoes! I’m a serious bacon worshipper and have always maintained that I would eat anything with bacon on it — including an old shoe. Luckily, yours are new, but I think you might be my anthropomorphizing solemate. (Sorry, couldn’t resist the pun!)

Hi there, I love the story of your plastic bag. A few years back I went to South Africa where there are many many homeless plastic bags that get blown about with the wind (much like Windy). The best bit is that these homeless plastic bags are known as the the Flowers of Africa because there are so many of them out in the fields.
