My Top 10 Best Workout Tunes
Stuff I don't hate October 13th, 2007I just got a copy of the pictures taken of me at Dorney Park last weekend. It’s glaringly evident that the time has come for me to get serious about losing some weight. So here I am again, trying to get mentally prepared to do a workout several times a week. I figure if I write about trying to exercise, I’ll be held accountable somehow. I’m taking all forms of encouragement, guys. And to those who work with me, throw bricks at my head if you see me at the candy dish. Aim high and don’t miss.
One of the few things that keeps me pumped up while working out is listening to music and only one kind will do — late 80s and early 90s funk and dance. Contrary to popular belief, a 40-something woman can get down and get funky. You may not want to see it, but it does happen and there’s nothing you can do to stop it. Look away if you must.
Here’s my Top 10 List of Best Workout Music:
1. It Takes Two — Rob Base & D.J. E-Z Rock
2. The Power — Snap!
3. Word Up – -Cameo
4. Get on the Good Foot — James Brown
5. The Glamorous Life — Sheila E
6. You Dropped a Bomb on Me — The Gap Band
7. Gonna Make You Sweat — C & C Music Factory
8. Bust a Move — Young MC
9. Everybody Everybody — Black Box
10. Push it –Salt ‘n Pepa
I’m off to do a workout. Funk out.
Stumble it!

Woo! Funk OUT, 40-ish sistah! I’m all about the 80s and 90s, but there a few from the 00’s you might want to consider too:
Pump It: Black Eyed Peas
Lift Me Up: Moby
Boyz: M.I.A.
I’m just now getting back to my former “hard ass” workout routines, and, boy, it sure doesn’t get any easier. Good luck and have fun with it!

J.D., thanks for the suggestions. I hadn’t heard any of those songs before. After listening, I could get down with M.I.A, but the video for it almost gave me a seizure.
No, it doesn’t get any easier. I used to be able to drop 5lbs in a week without even trying. Now, like my sisters and I always say, “It takes twice the effort for half the reward.” I need a personal trainer. By that, I mean I need someone to scream at me. That’s it. Just scream.

Hey, thanks for the list. There’s a few there that I need to add to my own funk playlist.
I couldn’t work out without my tunes!

Ann — You’re supposed to be busy screaming at me to get out and walk. What’s the matter with you?
October 15th, 2007 at 10:59 am
Don’t worry, I’ll scream at you. GET OUT AND WALK ALREADY! Happy?
October 15th, 2007 at 11:55 am
@ Regan — Yup. That’ll do it. I promise I’ll go out and walk at lunch.

I have always thought the Soundtrack to the Original Beverly Hills Cop Movie was great1 I was a twelve year old chearleader when we did a routine to “The Neutron Dance” by the Pointer Sisters.
October 15th, 2007 at 8:24 pm
@ A.D. — I can’t remember The Neutron Dance, but since you mentioned the Pointer Sisters, I’ve had “I’m So Excited” running through my head all afternoon.
I did get out for a walk today, so one down, 700 to go. I can do this, I can do this, I can do this….

The last time I did any serious workouts was in the 80’s and some of the music was (oh, gawd, you are going to die at this):
Let’s Get Physical – Olivia Newton John
1999 – Prince
Electric Avenue – Eddie Grant, I think…
Oh, man I HATE that last song now…
October 16th, 2007 at 9:54 am
@ Maureen — If I spend the day singing Let’s Get Physical, I’m hunting you down. I have to think of another song now to cleanse my brain.

Hahahahahaha!!!!
(“Let me hear your body talk, your body talk….”)

Okay, I’m sure you’re tired by now of me posting comments to year-old blog entries, but I’m working my way through your archives. Your workout list is PERFECT! If I had to make a list of my favorite “get up and jump around” songs, it would be all of those, with the exception of the James Brown song (just because I’ve never heard it). Now I’m going to have “Bust A Move” in my head for the rest of the day, and I’m not complaining.

Maureen — Oh, what’ja go and do that for? AAAACCK! My head!
absepa — Hey, I love it when people comment on old stuff. Warms my heart! I’m glad you like my favorite funky stuff. I’ll let you slide on the classic James Brown stuff because you’re probably too young to know it. Funk OUT!

I can never work out to a song I really like because it makes me hate the song.
May 23rd, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Audrarian — Hmmm, that’s an interesting concept. Luckily, that’s never happened to me. In fact, read my latest post. The way I’ve been dealing with it is to think of all the songs I like to walk to, in the hopes that it’ll erase the evil one. It works sometimes, but the Pointer Sisters always come back to me.

Awesome! Love this stuff… gonna try some of these tunes during my next workout… need something to get me pumped up. If you have a chance, check out my Workout Without Weights site… there’s some great working out info on there too.
