Losing Never Tasted So Gouda
food October 17th, 2008Question: How do you get a big box of gourmet cheese delivered to your house?
Answer: Challenge someone to a Cheese-Off and lose.
I recently posted about my love affair with Kraft Parmesan Cheese. Or more to the point, how lazy I am when it comes to tossing out numerous expired containers from my fridge.
Carla, from Blah blah blog-o-licious, commented on that post thusly:
I will take all the cheese I have, put it on the counter and send you a photograph…I think I might have you beaten.
This prompted the Cheese-Off challenge. I didn’t stand a chance.
I emailed her immediately and asked how it is possible one person can have so much delicious cheese in her fridge, while people like me are slumming it with the kind you shake through gigantic holes in plastic. It turns out Carla is a professional food broker, a dream job if ever there was one.
Perhaps out of sympathy, she offered to send me a sampling of cheese if I would like some. Like some? Like some?
When I awoke from my blackout, I gave her my address, crossing my fingers that she wasn’t kidding. She wasn’t. A mere two days later I received this:
Behold! The Cheese Motherlode! The Rembrandt Extra Aged Gouda cheese down front is almost gone already. My husband Dave and I inhaled it immediately after I took this picture. It is divine.
I feel like a kid at Christmas and all my new toys are in the lettuce crisper. I know they are there. I don’t want to sleep. I just want to eat cheese.
If any of you are in a 20 mile radius of my house, shoot me an email and we’ll arrange a cheese party. Bring wine and an appetite! Oh, and see those Galaxy Cappuccino Chocolate Mousse Duos on the right? If you come quickly enough, there may be some left for you.
Thank you, Carla! I’m blown away by your generosity. This cheese won’t get the chance to expire.

Check out Carla’s fun story on how she came to be known as The Cheese Lady. And be sure to take her cheese survey. I’m a Swiss girl all the way. Betcha thought I’d pick Parmesan!
Stumble it!

Oh my it looks yummy to me. I found some delicious cheese while in Maine over the summer at an adorable little shop.
It was a horseradish white sharp cheddar. They have it available here where I live made by one of those huge brand name companies but it’s just not the same.
I may just have to check this out. Because I have been craving it.
Just looking out her drawer makes me hungry. I am definitely a cheesy person!!:-)

Kathy,

Alan — No, you cannot have the bleu cheese because we’re saving that for last. I intend to make a giant salad and crumble it up in it. Unless you can get here in the next half hour, you’re out of luck my friend. Love that Carson quote!
robert bourne — Honestly, could I have lucked out any better?
Preston — I’m sorry! You’re giving away chocolate? You’re my new best friend.
mrsmouthy — And, really, would it kill him to send a box of money to like a million people? He wouldn’t miss any of it.
Lux — I’d rather have a food broker in the family than a doctor.
Emma in China — Thanks! I know I won’t want to take it down after Halloween. It’s growing on me.
Jenn — It was an unbelievably kind thing for Carla to do. I’m still stunned about it. And, yeah, throw some bacon in there and I’m in heaven. That reminds me. I just received some bacon-related merchandise that I’ll be giving away for upcoming “What’s That? Wednesday” posts. Be sure to get in on it!
Shinade — I’m already researching where to buy more of the Rembrandt gouda cheese. I’d also like to get more Sonoma Snacks, Mediterranean Jack. The latter has a very strong taste, very flavorful. I won’t accept any substitute.
navin — Well, I could probably get away with doing product reviews if people will send me stuff, but I like when it happens completely by chance. I’m glad you enjoy the blog.
Melissa — I have some sad news for you. There will be no party. I unloaded some of the cheese with my mother and sister. So there isn’t enough left for a party. I’m dieting, too, and I’m a little afraid to get on the scale as I’m sure I’ve blown this week’s progress. I’ll blame it on Carla.
Zip n Tizzy — No kidding! And I don’t know what I did to deserve such generosity. I’m still on a cheese high.
Bella Casa — Nope, no asiago cheese, but plenty of Edam and Gouda and brie and swiss and the list goes on and on. I promise I’ll upgrade my parmesan and romano cheeses. No more plastic bottles!
Mike — I’m sorry to say there isn’t much left, after I shared with my mom and sister. My husband and I felt so piggish and didn’t want to be greedy.

hi kathy!
it’s been a while since i last hopped to the junkdrawer. (^^)
…that’s a lot of cheese you got there… hmmmmnn.. too bad i am million miles away and couldn’t join your cheese party… if i could teleport, i would’ve done that and might have arrived on time for some wine and cheese..
but anyway, i enjoy reading your posts so i added the junkdrawer to my blogroll.. if you don’t mind.. π

Rick — I know! We all need Carla in our lives. Maybe she could start an “Adopt-a-Cheese-Lover Day” and you have to submit an application to be considered. She picks the most pathetic story and sends you a cheese box as reward. Come on, Carla. Look what you started!
Mama O — I should have realized we’d eat most of it. What was I thinking? I’m sorry my belly is full of delicious cheese.
Angelika — I have to say, we’re doin’ OK in that department. We paced ourselves fairly well. ‘Nuff said.
Happy Hour Sue — I vowed to avoid the scale for two days at least. I’m afraid one day I’ll get on and it’ll say “Cheese Overload. Get the hell off!”
clerihew — Hey, welcome back! Teleportation would have been the only way you could have gotten here in time. We made good progress on the cheese in the first 24 hours. Thanks for adding me to your blogroll. Mmmmm, blog rolls…

The Hawg — Tell me about it. I’m in the computing biz and I don’t get squat for free except complaints about people’s PC problems.
Lauren — I gotta start making friends with clothing designers, auto makers and jewelers. You never know, right?
Anne — I don’t know, but I want the friends my co-workers has. They took her out for her birthday last week to a fancy restaurant where she had a $37 piece of steak.
Lori — I’m with ya, sister. I started a new diet only a week before the cheese arrived. That’s part of the reason I shared so much of it with my family. I knew I could eat it all!
October 19th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
I would love to go to your cheese party but i dont think i live in a twenty mile radius of your house but i do in fact like cheese.
My favorite kind of cheese is mozzerella, but it can not be fresh, I dont know why I cant eat it freash because it does not have that salty flavor.

brooke — Sad to say, it didn’t matter anyway. The party never happened because we gave away some of the cheese and ate most of the rest. That’s interesting about how you don’t like fresh mozzarella. I didn’t care for the Brie because it was too salty. But I did enjoy most of the rest. Mmmmm.
Stephanie C — Oh, aren’t you sweet! I always thought I could write a book in my spare time, but then I realized I had none. I don’t know that I’m prepared to take a blogging break. Just writing that sends me into fits. I need an intervention.
Holly — I love cheese on top of other things as well. Like bacon, cheese makes everything else better!
Carol — It was unbelievably awesome what Carla did for me. And, for the record, there was no party. We gave away some of the cheese to my family and ate most of the rest. There’s only a little left of the sliced Edam and the whole package of bleu. We made quick work of it!

Swubird — The question is do I keep it up until after Halloween? It’s really growing on me!
Mimi Lenox — Up until now, this was a bacon blog. Cheese and bacon? Better yet! I’ll be checkin’ out the meme. I’m due for one. Thanks!
Chris — Yes, the goudas were my absolute favorite. If you think this was processed, you should see what I usually eat!

I would have to say that dairy, cheese in particular, is the most widely consumed protein in our house. Cheese for breakfast with toast, snack on cheese, cheese sandwiches or quesadillas for lunch, cheese sauce on pasta, cheese in soup, on soup, on salad, etc., etc. And we aren’t one cheese mice either – we like it all except for maybe limburger. π We actually have to go shopping this weekend and get more cheese so any mystery boxes of yummy cheese would be very welcome on my doorstep :D.

I used to clean houses and was asked to do a fridge cleaning. I assumed it meant organize and scrub the inside of the fridge. Reading this makes me wonder if it was a mistake to throw out all of their outdated food. They never said anything, but I filled the trash can with a lot of cheese and salad dressings.

Audrarian — Yep, cheese bottles, salad dressing and scary, scary milk.
