The Mind of a Mom — My husband thought the same thing when I showed him the picture.
brooke — You’re going to have to explain a hillbilly pool table to me. Do you mean one that’s been sitting out in the rain for months and is still used?
amy lilley — Yeah, I guess it wasn’t so easy. Well, it was to me, but then again, I took the picture. D’oh!
The Mind of a Mom — No, not a thumb tack. I’m sorry this is driving you insane.
Stacy — Good guess! Wrong answer!
Matt — That is such a good guess. But it’s so no right.
David — I love that two people thought this was a gun shot hole. I’m not the gun-toting type.
Lori — You do not have it, but your idea is interesting.
Susan K — Good guess. That’s what I thought it looked like myself. Without the metal insert.
MA Fat Woman — I’m very sorry. Don’t come back until tonight. I’ll probably post the answer this evening.
Riayn — Ah! You’re not the first person to suggest that. But no.
meleah rebeccah — You’re in good company! Don’t feel bad.

I was going to guess one of the holes on the bottom of an iron, but since you said it’s not teeny tiny, I’m going to go with the hole in a door where the door know (probably painted white) used to be.

I think it looks life an access port for some duct work, but I’ve seen so much construction lately I might be jaded.
Under the category of most creative guess, How about a portal to Hell at Lehigh University? It is a black hole, and I’m sure if you get to nosy you can get sucked down. They do have portals to Hell at Lehigh, don’t they? At least a couple over at Tech Support?

Perhaps an empty rubbish bin? A table with a hole, illuminated from above…

How about one of those indoor golfing thingamajiggys?
January 5th, 2009 at 7:38 am
These are so madening and equally humiliating! I fancy myself a pretty sharp tack until I visit the “What’s That” posts and then I slink away after peering at the photo for MINUTES, mind you! I need to take more fish oil capsules. Humpf.

I have no clue. Looks like concrete or stucco, and I’d say a hole for a port-hole style window, but that would make the wall behind it REALLY close. “And I’d bet money nobody has one of these in their houses, but they’ve seen them before” Hmmmm…is it a coin slot in a machine?

The tormenting continues! I just got an email informing me of a new post at your blog and thought, finally the answer! I open the email only to find out it is telling me about YESTERDAYS post (this post). LET US KNOW ALREADY!
OK, I will calm down… you said most people wouldn’t have it in their homes and you alluded to it being big.
I’ll go with an open manhole (already said above) or a cleanout to a septic tank, or a place to dump used car oil (but I don’t think you change your oil)…
I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to a “next post” so much.

Okay I know I said my guess was my last and final one but I love a good challange!
It is a candle holder. You know the flat(ish) kind that hold large thick candles.
Or it is looking down on the top of the screw that holds the hands in place on a clock!
Now you have to either tell us or shoot me and put me out of my misery!! LoL

EVERYONE: There’s a winner! Check the latest post for the winning entry.
Cromely — Both good guesses, in fact, the door knob thing is what I thought it looked like when I cropped it.
Chris Casey — I would love it to be a portal to another place, especially when I need to get away for a bit. Portals don’t need to be large, do they? Like, I can still fit through one this small if I wish it, right?
Lori — No rubber bumper thingy, though I like your description.
Sam — Well, it is a table with a hole in it, but that wasn’t specific enough. Go look at the answer. You’ll kick yourself. You were so close!
Kathy — Golf hole is incorrect, and you have to be more specific than thingamajiggys. Thingamabob is also unacceptable. Just for the record.
Vivienne — I love making you guys crazy. Truly I do.
Data Entry Services — Well, I thought it was easy because you can make out that the hole doesn’t go through something all the way. It’s a hole to a cavernous pit and I was thinking someone would get that it was a desk.
Susan K — Nope, but very good guess. I have one of those tables and we never put the umbrella in it because the table is under a covered patio.
Steve — Oooo! No! I like your guess, though. The only bowling ball is the fake one I use when playing Wii Bowling.
The Mind of a Mom — Oh, my dear, I felt so guilty reading your answers, knowing the correct guess was already made. I hope you didn’t get a headache.
Jenn Thorson — I do! I do! You’re a smarty pants. I’m so disappointed in you.
Patricia — Good guess. But nyet.
Jayne — You’re right, it does look like an eclipse. You are in good company with that guess.
brooke — Gotcha. You know your hillbilly!
MerapuLand — Aw! Points for cuteness!
Laurelei — You’ve obviously thought long and hard about it. I’m sorry you are wrong. Better luck next time!
Melissa — You got my email about that. I’m really sorry I messed with the Feedburner settings. I was trying to get the email notification out sooner, not later. I’ve since changed it again, to send notifications between 1-3AM, so you should always have them in your morning mail if I have posted the night before, which is my typical posting time.
feefifoto — That’s a great guess. I hate putting those stupid bags on. It shouldn’t be that hard!
lauren — It is a holder, but not for coffee. For ink! Well, if you drink black coffee like I do, then maybe you could call it ink.
shadowsrider — I feel bad there was some shine on there from the camera flash. It might have thrown some people. Of course, I’m dastardly like that.
Ivanhoe — Yes, someone guessed it by this point, but I was so busy at work, I couldn’t get the post up announcing the winner. Check the newest post!
Still-befuddled Trade Show Guru Steve — I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I know I messed up the Feedburner thing. Sorry that you thought it was a new post. I’ve hopefully fixed that. So do you have an old school desk in your house? I’m curious if anyone does.
Woman Tribune — I don’t blame you for not sifting through this many comments. If it makes you feel any better, I thought it looked like doorknob hole to. If I didn’t already know what it was, that’d have been my guess.
Jeff — I loved your guess. I stared and stared at it and then it hit me. Pencil tip up really, really close. Good one!
Susan K — I love the multitude of different guesses here. I’m sorry it drove people insane. Um. No I’m not!
The Mind of a Mom — OK, so you’re back. You’re still wrong, my dear. You were the inspiration for the post title announcing the winner. So that’s something, right?
Broadway Matron — Go look! I posted the winning entry!
shadowsrider — It does, doesn’t it? You’ve just given me a good idea. I might expand my items to those found outdoors as well as indoors. Might get more interesting!
