A What’s That Winner
contests November 29th, 2009No one stood a chance.
Since Wednesday’s What’s That item posed such a challenge, I decided to post another picture on Saturday that revealed more of it. Within five minutes of doing so, Grace of Hugz Before You Go entered the winning guess.
Here are the two images I posted:
Grace guessed correctly that this is a cigar cutter. Here are some alternate views:
For the record, I caught heat from my sister at the Thanksgiving table that this object wasn’t mine (it belongs to my brother-in-law). My sister thought I’d always claimed the What’s That items were items found in my house.
And then she punished me by making me prepare the mashed potatoes, corn, dinner rolls and gravy.
Tough crowd.
So, for all future items featured for What’s That?, I’ll disclose whether the object is mine or borrowed.
Congratulations, Grace! I’ll have your prizes in the mail soon!
Stumble it!

Well, I could never have guessed it as I’ve NEVER seen one before. Even seeing the full image I would have no idea.

Not being a cigar aficionado myself, I never would have guessed that.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you verrry verrry much! (takes a bow). And truth to tell I’ve never seen one in real life either – have seen them used in movies tho.

I was thinking one of those would be perfect for my catnip cigars. I could just cut the end off and get to the catnip stuffing!

Well. Even after you SHOWED the entire photo, I STILL didn’t know what it was.
I never stood a chance.
Happy Holidays anyway!

I still wouldn’t have gotten it. Tough break on the mashed potatoes.

Now I don’t feel so bad that I didn’t know what it was! I’ve never even heard of a cigar cutter. Props to Grace for her answer.

Congratulations, Grace! I’m always impressed when people guess these. As kathryn said, above, even with the full photo AND the answer, I still wouldn’t have guessed.
Good one, Kathy!

Babs Beetle — But now you know! Just in case you’re on a game show or something and you have to identify it.
CatLadyLarew — And neither would I. In fact, I wasn’t even sure it was a cutter when I pulled it out of a humidor.
Ron — I was impressed how quickly she guessed it after the second picture. Grace deserves a special prize for that.
Grace! — I still wouldn’t have known what it was if I hadn’t known myself. You have a good memory and a keen eye. Ironically, I just saw one used on a TV show about cruiselines. They were showing an upscale plan where you could go to a “smoking room” and have cigars prepped and served to you like food. They used a cutter not like this one. Theirs looked more like a guillotine. Congrats again!
Daisy the Curly Cat — Oh, boy! You have catnip cigars! I think I shall buy one for our kitties. They would think it’s so cool. You have the funnest toys, Daisy.
kathryn — Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. What can I say. Hope you had a great holiday weekend!
ann — Better luck next time. (If I must say so myself, I make pretty awesome mashed potatoes. Totally worth the punishment).
absepa — Yeah, and she never saw one in real life. Kudos to her!
ann of the junkdrawerblogfamily — Thanks for hosting! Everything was DEE-licious! I’m still mourning the loss of the carrot cake. You gotta know how desperately I wanted to bring that home.
Fisher — What can I say? I take my licks.
amy lilley — And see all the things you learn here at The Junk Drawer? Mine was very nice, thank you. Hope yours was the same.
JD at I Do Things — Aren’t you glad you’re my partner in crime? Thanks for looking at the photos ahead of time and giving me your opinion. It really helps when I have tough ones.

Yeah – I looked long and hard and did not even venture a guess. Even if I had seen the whole thing AND you had said it was for cutting something, I would have still had no idea. Why do you cut cigars?
Never mind, I Googled it. http://cigars.about.com/od/howtomaximizeenjoyment/ss/0062402_2.htm
I guess I am just so out of touch having never smoked and usually running as fast as I can in the opposite direction whenever I see a cigar. 😉

I never would have guessed that. Smoking is very bad for you – whether it be cigarettes or cigars! I knew this would be yours.
November 30th, 2009 at 7:18 am
Hah! It still smelled of garlic to me. Must have been cutting garlic cigars…

Wow, you can’t please everyone, can ya? It’s a neat little tool, that cigar cutter. Not that I smoke or have ever seen one or anything…
But that nifty tortoise-shell handle– it has style!

I wouldn’t guessed that – ever. Then again, I’m not very good at guessing any of your “What’s That” items. Maybe I lack imagination or something.

Even with all the alternate views I wouldn’t have gotten this one. I don’t think I have ever seen a cigar clipper except the one used on my son for his circumcision, which didn’t look anything like that, more like a mini guillotine. Congratulations Grace!

Will — I popped over to that link . I just learned that the end you cut is the one you put in your mouth. For some reason, I figured it was the other way around. I’m clueless too.
Pricilla — Don’t worry. You’re in good company with all the other goats…er…people who lost.
ishmediapodcast — Would have been worse had I been forbidden from eating it.
Data Entry Services — I would have never guessed it either if I didn’t know what it was. For a split second, when I picked it up, I wasn’t even sure. Had to double-check.
Jaya — Hey, that’s a brilliant idea. Garlic should come in the shape of cigars. Imagine how much easier it’d be to cut.
Jenn Thorson — It had an expensive look and feel. I looked up what other kinds of cutters there are and this was among the nicer ones. I guess if you have a humidor, why skimp on everything else?
Auntie E — Make my own rolls. Are you crazy? Hockey pucks. That’s what they’d turn out to be. Hockey pucks.
Sherry — Every time I do one of these, I have a certain amount of pity for the guessers. If this was someone else’s contest, I’d be completely frustrated every single time.
Jen — OMG. That sounds painful. I’d ask if you were kidding. But I don’t think you are. OUCH!
Crabby Blogging Lady — Congrats, then! Also, if you’re not following me on Twitter or Facebook, you should be. That’s where you’ll see me posting a new item first (my blog posts feed FB automatically whenever they go up, which is where some people are able to get in first with a guess.)
Jude – Most people haven’t. Don’t feel bad.
Arie Rich — Grace already has a Junk Drawer magnet, so she gets a mystery prize. I can’t reveal that here, since she doesn’t even know what it is yet.

Against that textured background it was hard to tell. It looked more like part of the locking/handle mechanism of a very nice brief case.

Eric — I did wonder for a second whether the background leathery-looking table would screw anyone up.
