A What’s That Winner!
contests, What's That? May 13th, 2010We have a winner! Stephanie Barr guessed yesterday’s What’s That item correctly, though not by its official name. She described it thusly:
“Looks to me like the receptacle for a fastener, like a snap or a rivet, where you pound the fastener in and it’s deformed by this receptacle into the right shape.”
For the record, the object is called a dapping block.
The item belongs to a friend of mine who makes handwrought sterling silver jewelry. She says “Each side of the steel block has a different size indentation. Metal is placed on top and another tool is hammered into it.”
Here are some pictures showing the object in its entirety, along with the other tool that is used with it.
Thanks for playing this week’s What’s That! I expect to have another one next week, so keep your eyes peeled.
Congratulations, Stephanie! I’ll contact you shortly about your prizes.
Stumble it!

Uhhh… Kathy? I don’t think what your winner described is what you have here. I think this… http://www.super-i.net/image/machine/snap-1.jpg …is more what she was thinking of. Something much smaller. But I don’t think any of us, unless we made jewelry, would have guessed what it actually was. 🙂

Well congratulations to Stephanie. I’m clueless when it comes to these things.

Congrats to Stephanie. I wouldn’t have guessed it but only because I suck at these, and because I missed the post (how the hell did that happen?). They look like the same tool to me (in reference to Moonshadow) though one looks smaller.

I don’t make jewelry, but once I read Stephanie’s description, I was like, d’oh! Of course. And I would think Kathy would know whether the description fit the item — it’s her contest after all! 🙂

I’m not one to criticize someone else’s game, but I wouldn’t know what these things are if you pictured the entire object.

I’m floored. Well, even if it’s a little different than I was envisioning, I’m more than willing to take a prize.
Cool beans.

Oh wow, that’s so cool. Congratulations Stephanie! I never would have guessed; I couldn’t work out whether it was convex or concave and then I couldn’t remember which one convex was and which one concave was.

Does anyone get points for coming up with an alternate use for the watchamathingamabobs? I would use that to crush herbs that I imagine myself growing from scratch in my fantasy world. That one part also is the perfect ball like shape to be a hip socket replacement for a very tiny person.

Congrats to Stephanie. Never seen one of those before. Good job Kathy. That was a hard one. I sure was off on the wrong road. Oh Well, next time. Yeah right.
Have a great day.

Congrats Stephanie! Dang, I was SO SURE it was a cymbal…

I was right too…I said it wasn’t a hitch!!!
Suggest you revise the rules for this game. the object you pic has to be something that at least 75% of your readers have seen before. I could have seen the ENTIRE picture of the item…and I still would not have even known what it is. (:-)))

Hi, everyone. Obviously some of you are taking issue with this item. Was it too hard? Maybe. Have I ever had to give hints before because an item was too difficult? Yes. Did I have to this time? Nope. Stephanie described the concept perfectly well in my book.
You might not realize how long it takes me to come up with an item that isn’t too easy or too hard to guess. The fact is, if I put up something too easy, then it ruins it for the majority of readers. Someone will guess it within minutes and then game over.
I know some are hard, but they should be. Isn’t that the fun of it? Trying your darnedest to think what it could be? It is for me when I try to guess objects on other people’s blogs where my little game was adopted.
I may put these contests on the back burner for a while. I want them to be fun and entertaining, not subject to so much scrutiny and debate. If it’s not fun anymore, I don’t want to do it.
Thanks to everyone who plays and finds the joy in it.

Drawers are for filling and I have my own guess. It doesn’t matter to me that the contest has eneded with a winner. Nevermind, I’ll wait a week.

Oh no Kath! I look forward to Wednesdays just because of this game! Please don’t stop!!!
May 14th, 2010 at 3:53 pm
Wow, my guess wasn’t even close. I must be a terrible judge of size. I love a challenge once in a while.
May 14th, 2010 at 4:35 pm
Well, I’m here to say that it is VERY hard to get the easy/difficulty balance correct every time. And who would think that I (a Brit) would guess an old spur correctly?
I’ve never seen one of these before, but I’d never seen a spur before either.
Please don’t stop doing these Kathy. They are FUN!

Kathy, your “What’s That” posts are so much fun. I’ll be the first to admit that I am TERRIBLE at guessing, but I always have fun at least trying and then reading everyone else’s guesses. And it’s fun to learn about a new thingamabob, too.
There’s absolutely no way to determine how many people are going to know the item you’re posting — that’s ridiculous! What, are you supposed to ask us all if we know the item, and based on how many of us do, then you’ll post it? Uhhh . . . that’s not quite how it works.
We all (well, most of us, anyway) appreciate how hard you work not only to write such funny, insightful, relatable, and smart posts but also to come up with your items for What’s That Wednesday. I know how hard it is to come up with just the right item, and I’d say by the success rate of the contest, you’re doing something right.

Hi Kathy!
Keep these “What’s That” blogs challenging. Otherwise it’s no fun! It’s like looking up cheat codes to video games online…. Have you ever thought about having your readers submit photos to use in your “What’s That Wednesday” blog?

I thought ya did good, Kathy. Even though thinking it was convex and what it could have been was no where near what it shoulda been and even knowing that it wasn’t convex wouldn’t have helped me figure it out.
I learnt me sumpin’ new today. Thanks.
