Whoopin’ it Up on a Saturday Night
Bizarre, Stupid things I do June 4th, 2011Me: You know what I could go for?
Husband: What?
Me: A Pepsi.
Husband: Are you pregnant?
This exchange is hardly odd because I haven’t had a real soda in about ten years and so Dave thought something was up. I’m strictly a water and coffee drinker.
The last time I drank a Pepsi was the first day of a vacation. It was a special event that I was going to drink a soda. And so after that, any time we had real soda for Dave in the house, it became known to me as Vacation Soda.
I tried to drink a carbonated Orange Crush at a picnic once and I remembered why I don’t bother with liquids of the bubbly variety. My eyes and nose watered and then I experienced that ever-painful thing where I blow up and can’t burp. Fun.
I don’t drink alcohol either. Not because I have anything against imbibing. It just turns me narcoleptic, which makes me no fun at all for the people who are enjoying a drink. I can’t even be the designated driver because I’m two sheets to the sleep after even a half glass of wine.
So if you’re considering taking me out to dinner or a night out with the girls, you pretty much have to order me a water on the rocks or things could get real ugly. And by ugly, I mean I’ll either explode at the table or fall asleep in your lap.
Dave’s running out now to get me that Pepsi. Mark the date. June 4, 2011. Kathy drank a soda this decade.
Stumble it!

Wow, you’re a cheap date! What does it cost to feed you?

Aaaaaahhhh! First swig! Delicious. Except it made me hiccup. Take it slow, Kathy. Take it slow.

Well, at least, you didn’t go for a Coke. My late grandfather, who worked for Pepsi for over 30 years, would be rolling in his grave if he heard of you looking forward to a Coke. 😉 Well, if I told him, he would. 🙂

I don’t drink much carbonated-drinks either. Sometimes I even count back the months to the last time I had a soft-drink, burger, fried chicken or even fries.
No, I am definitely not a healthy eater.

I love soda, unfortunately. All those empty calories! Just the smell of a Wild Cherry Pepsi will make my mouth water. *sigh*

Of course, MY preference would be if you either fell asleep at the table or exploded in my lap.
Whoops! — that sounded better in my head.

Kathy, pour that Pepsi over ice. It somehow takes out half the fizz, which reduces the gastrointestinal bubbles that could go either way after mercilessly blowing you up like a balloon, and because it’s so cold, burns more calories to drink it. 😉

I prefer water, too. If you lick it directly from the faucet, it has a better taste than from a bowl.

I don’t drink pop hardly at all either just because it’s high in wasted calories. (Can’t stand the taste of diet pop.) Hope you enjoyed the Pepsi. As a kid the only kind I would drink was Creme soda.

Sharyn — I am! For food, you could put a bacon cheeseburger in front of me, and I’m happy as a clam. Mmmm. Clams.
unfinishedperson — I never liked Coke. Too syrupy, or something. Your grandfather would not need worry!
Jaffer — Ever since I got on the water bandwagon, I haven’t wanted to have sodas. I think as you gain a taste for pure water, you lose it for other things. And then if you drink something like soda or juice, the sugar is overpowering. Even with diet drinks, it’s almost overwhelming.
Surfie — Ahhh! Cherry Pepsi! I remember that. They still make it? Last night, I craved that blast of flavor. Even though every sip killed me, it was so good and flavorful. I had about 4 ounces. It was a really crazy night! I’m hungover today.
Nanny Goats — LMAO. Either way, there’d be a mess to clean up. Bring your Dyson if it happens.
Theresa — I will today! Even though Dave bought me a small bottle, I still have a lot left. Over ice will be my little treat later today.
cairnhill — I promise I’d direct my explosion away from innocent bystanders.
Daisy the Curly Cat — Oh, yes, Daisy, how I know that. My Shadow still has to drink her water from the faucet. She’s on the counter at least 10 times a day, even though I put yummy filtered water in her bowl. Silly cat!
Karen — Agreed. I’d much rather get my calories from something decadent in food, not drink. I want to chew my calories!

I had a roommate in college who would pour a soda into a glass and then stir it with a spoon for a bit to get rid of some of the carbonation. Maybe this would help!
I too drink very little soda, but once in a while I want a Coke in a pony bottle…Wegman’s has real Coke from places where they don’t put HFCS in it and it tastes so much better. (At Passover they have it in 2L bottles since corn syrup is not Kosher for Passover). Yum!

I can’t drink soft drinks either. At what age do we start noticing that our bodies can’t process certain foods and drinks? I sound like my G’ma now, with my list of issues that I have with this food or that. Sheesh.
And pretty soon I’m gonna say things like “Why doesn’t that boy get his hair cut–he looks like a girl!” and “Turn that racket down! I can’t understand a word he is ‘singing’!”. Oh wait–I do that too.
Too bad about the alcohol thing. 🙁
June 5th, 2011 at 10:11 am
Hmmm, I like my water hot from a black bucket. I like my grain before it becomes alcohol if you know what I mean.
Enjoy your Pepsi and I really hope you don’t explode. We would miss you and who would tell us about Bacon Camp?

I personally can’t live without soda (especially Pepsi). I know that it’s not recommended, but what can i do, it has a charming taste. Congratulations for drinking that Pepsi:)

Diet Coke is my drug of choice. I have at least one or two every day. A day without it is unimaginable to me. But then I do drink wine and occasionally fall asleep in people’s laps. Not often, but it has happened. And it wasn’t pretty.

Diet Coke is also my drug of choice, and it helps neutralize the calories from my morning McDonald’s Small Non-fat Mocha coffee! 🙂

I’m a seltzer girl. My boyfriend doesn’t like it, though. He says the carbonation holds the promise of flavor it fails to deliver.
I’m never sure what to say to that.
June 5th, 2011 at 9:00 pm
If I could not burp, I know EXACTLY what would happen… I would stick to water for the sake of others! 😉
June 6th, 2011 at 5:01 am
Shieldmaiden — I’ve heard of the Cokes at Wegmans, from a coworker who had real cane sugar cokes in Costa Rica. He was so excited to find them there. I’m looking next time!
lin — We’re all G’mas now. “Pull up your pants!” “Stop making a racket!” “Get off my lawn! (unless you’re going to mow it!”
Pricilla — Warm water? Really? I unknowingly took a drink of hot water with a pill last week and almost choked. Gross!
Linda Medrano — I think Jen has a Diet Coke addiction, too, right? I guess it depends on whose lap we fall asleep in, yes? Could go either way. Fun or a slap to the head.
meleah — Hee. It’s really no fun for me. I’m the wet rag of the party.
Ferd — Better living through chemistry (I believe you!)
June O’Hara — “He says the carbonation holds the promise of flavor it fails to deliver.” I love that. It sounds like a well-written ad for a product, but one that won’t sell anything.
Katherine — I can handle the blowing up part, just barely, but what really bothers me is that I make gurgling noises in place of burping. No air gets out. I sound like a sink backing up. Again, fun.

We drink mainly water too and don’t drink soft drinks. Now Mom will have a coke once in a blue moon and you know that isn’t often. Hope you have a fantastic week.

I can’t remember the last time I had a coke or Pepsi. Maybe since I saw it clean up a dirty penny in seconds and discovered you could clean your toilet out with it using one small bottle. I do drink lemonade but wait for most of the fizz to escape before downing it. Can’t stand all the bubbles.

I feel you. I am not a soda drinker, but it is due to acid reflux and ulcers. If I do drink it is diet coke, regular coke gives me the same watery eyes and burp. Don’t care for that at all. Plus, I am watching what I eat and sodas can trigger cravings and hunger. Can’t let fizzy stuff backtrack me =)
June 6th, 2011 at 12:10 pm
“I’m strictly a water and coffee drinker.”
Meeee too, Kathy! And I especially love dark roasted coffee!
I very rarely drink carbonated drinks because they make me BURP like crazy. I only have a glass with a burger about once every couple of months because it makes a burger taste so much better.
However, I prefer Coke. With a wedge of lemon – yummy!

O!M!G! i had never heard of this inability to burp – and now you’re the THIRD person in about two months. i think we need to start a foundation.
now, i have to go. i have to click off of your blog so i can stop covering my beloved Diet Dr. Pepper’s eyes. i didn’t want you and all your anti-carbonation words to hurt its feelings. (oh, who am i kidding? it’s the vodka’s eyes that i’m covering…)

OK – I must know: are you pregnant, did you burp, and did you enjoy it? You can always let a soda go flat before you drink it. Flat Coke was what my mom gave me for any stomach upsets when I was a kid. frederick sallaz
