Coffee and Make It Light
Stuff I don't hate October 4th, 2011For the last couple weeks since my father passed away, I’ve been visiting my mom in the mornings before work.
This arrangement works great for both of us, as we’re the early risers in the family.
I leave the house at 6AM, stop off at McDonald’s to grab us both coffee and we share some good chat time before I head to the office.
But here’s the problem.
The shopping center where the McD’s is located doesn’t have any lights on in the parking lot at 6AM when it’s still pitch black out.
This means every time I pull into the lot, it’s like an amusement park ride for me. I barely find the entrance, I have to dodge those cement divider thingies with plants in them, and I have to loop back in the dark to get to the McD’s drive-thru.
It’s an exhilarating joy ride where I hope I don’t run someone over or take out my muffler.
So I decided to write the faceless management company who runs the shopping center to ask if they could leave the lights on longer.
Ha! Fat chance, right?
Here’s what I wrote to them, along with what I expected they’d be thinking as they read my impossibly gutsy request (in boldface):
Greetings. I’m writing to inquire about the possibility of having
parking lot lights illuminated in the pre-dawn hours at the Easton, PA
25 St. Shopping Center that your firm rents out. We just take rent checks. We don’t care about lights.
Because one of your tenants, McDonald’s, has a 24/7 drive-thru, there is a fair amount of traffic going in and out of the parking lot without benefit of lighting greater than what McD’s casts off from its building. It’s not enough light. So go ask McDonald’s to turn on more lights.
It’s nearly impossible to find the shopping center entrance on the
McDonald’s side of the parking lot. Are you blind?
As well, there are two cement dividers one needs to drive around in order to access the McDonald’s drive-thru. Can’t you remember where they are every day? It’s not like they move.
From a safety standpoint, more light would be most beneficial. I was nearly hit this morning by a driver who could not see me, even though I had my headlights on. There are bad drivers everywhere. Not. Our. Fault.
Thank you for anything you can do to address my concern. Go to hell.
A mere seven minutes after I emailed them, here’s the response I got:
Kathleen, I will have our maintenance person change the timer for the lights. Please forward any maintenance issues to me.
Um. Wha? I’m speechless. I don’t know what to do here. This never happens.
They listened. They solved. They ROCK!
I’ll toast my next cup ‘o coffee to you, not-so-faceless corporation with a heart!
Stumble it!

As the owner of some shopping centers I felt as if this would be the response. Nobody wants an accident to happen on their property especially business owners. You probably saved someone from a big lawsuit.

it’s almost frustrating ain’t it.. it’s like when you get pulled over for speeding and your all worked up for a good argument but the cop is so nice and then let’s you off…..

OMG…I’m speechless too!?!?
BRAVO to McDonalds’s because you don’t get that kind of response from many (if not any) companies!
And bravo to you for taking the initiative to write them a letter/email!
I’ve been thinking about you lately and hoping all is well.

Kathy,
I’m so sorry about your father. I haven’t been around. I needed to take some time off from the Internet.
Kudos to you for getting management to see the light. Maybe they heard about your driving. : )

Hooray for things going right! And for taking the initiative to do something about it. My Mommeh would rather just grumble about stuff.

That’s fantastic! I’m sure others in your community will appreciate the lighting too. Maybe since it was such an easy thing to fix, it was handled quickly. Anyway, good job there good citizen!
That’s nice you visit your mom before work every morning. I used to stop by my dad’s before work every day after my mom died and he was all alone with just his kitties. I think he really looked forward to that time each day!

A well written letter can have amazing results. As long as you don’t go all pyscho on them most businesses will try and fix a problem that is fixable. Or so I have found

Good thing they replied and considered your suggestion Kathy. Its good for them, for their tenants, and for you, as a regular customer of MC-D which happens to be one of their tenants. =) .

I have found that people respond to the written word much more satisfactorily than they do to a telephone complaint. Good thing they made the appropriate changes in lighting. An accident after a written complaint like yours would be cause for legal action.

I am shocked – SHOCKED! – that you got that kind of response. It’s like they’re HUMANS with FEELINGS with power over machines and bureaucracy, and I’m pretty sure companies don’t hire those any more.

Marybeth — You know, I never really thought of that. I suppose they would care, but I just never expected such a quick and easy solution. Ya get so jaded, you know?
robert bourne — You hit the nail on the head! I was all geared up for either 1) no response at all, or 2) not our problem. It was so refreshing to get an answer so fast from such a nice, understanding human. Imagine that.
Ron — I guess we just get so used to working with non-humans (ie. phone menu push-button hell), that to get an answer from a person just completely threw me for a loop! I’m doing well, Ron. Mom’s doing OK, too. Thank you for asking.
Lauren — No worries. I’ve been away too, even before my father passed. I don’t visit other blogs as much as I want to, in the interest of time. I’m so glad you guys still come here! And I laughed about your driving dig. Yeah, I’d avoid me too! Seriously, I’m that crazy woman driver when I can’t see anything!
Marvin — May wonders never cease.
Daisy the Curly Cat — Thank you, Daisy. Tell your mommeh to be really vocal. Like you are about getting treats. You know it works, so tell her if she meows to the right person, she’ll get a treat.
Karen — You know, I was thinking that! Maybe some other drivers will think “So glad the lights are on. I really needed those!” Even though my mom insists I don’t have to come every day (is she getting sick of me already?), I like to go and check in on her and I love that morning time with her. Great way to start my day.
Ferd — “Little things really count!” That they do, my friend. It makes up for a lot of the little crap things we have to deal with on a daily basis. I wrote the guy back and said he restored my faith in humanity.
June O’Hara — Thanks. I remember writing my email and every time I made a comment, I thought, “Oh, they’re just gonna throw this email away.” I felt like I was asking for the world. But I got it! Weeeee!
Pricilla — You’re right. The problem is we’re all so fed up with getting shoddy service, that we almost never expect to get what we want. I’ve gotten very jaded in my years. I promise never to be a psycho, OK?
RonLeyba — You are so right. I forgot to look at it from their side of the equation. I’d say this is a win-win!
Linda Medrano — You’re right, but I never really thought about a potential accident as a concern of theirs. I always figure big corps. put all the burden on the consumer whenever possible. I’m so glad I didn’t just stew about the lights. I’m glad I spoke up.
Laura — I’m still in disbelief. I love my visits with mom, as long as she’ll still have me first thing in the morning. She said I didn’t have to come every day, but it’s nice to start it off on a good note, both for her and for me.
Margaret — I didn’t think they hired them either. It’s just still so incredible to me. A seven minute response no less! It’s like a Christmas miracle.
Linda — Yep. One of those very rare occasions. Hey, maybe I’ll start asking for all kinds of things and see how far it can get me. Need anything?

I hadn’t thought about any possible law suit but it’s true. The lighting is their responsibility and you probably brought to their attention the fact that they were probably still set for summertime.
Good for you! I’m still amazed at the very quick response though.

Wow. Holy crap. I can’t believe they listened AND that they are willing to do something about the lighting situation.
Although, your imaginary responses are way more hilarious.

First, sorry for your loss. (I’ve been away from the blogs for a few weeks so I missed this news.)
I love how your are spending the morning with your mom. I did that with my grandpa for a few weeks after grandma died. We would get up and clean and have coffee just like before. It was all I could do to help fill the large hole for awhile. I’m sure your mom really appreciates the time together.
Second of all, holy heck Batman! Why to get some results! I love when things work out in a positive way.

Which goes to show sometimes they do listen, and that they are totally not without hearts. Well at least some of these corporations. Most of the time though, these faceless corporate management are greedy hogs and all they only care about 2 things: (1) getting money and, (2) getting even more money! I can’t blame you if that is how you wrote to them. I would have done the same. 😀

That is classic! I’m glad you got the response you got =) More often than not, even if in this instance it has saved them a potential lawsuit, it seems as though the common response of ‘no’ is given just for the sake of negativity. What a positive outcome though!

I’ve never encountered a company with as much positive and negative press as McD’s. I like to think of them as the baseline “doing our best on automatic” type of company, but your experience is at least a positive- even if the food is still no better than before!
