We’re Quitting Our Jobs
Fun, Stuff I don't hate March 28th, 2012It’s official. My husband and I are quitting our day jobs.
Why?
Because we need more time in the day to play Facebook games.
It’s extremely hard work trying to squeeze in three hours of game play every day when you have to work eight hours at something else.
We’re addicted – like morphine addicted – and need to find a way to play for 20 hours a day.
Because we still have a house to pay off, we’ve decided to look for sponsorships to keep us financially afloat.
We’re thinking of tattooing Pop Cap Games on our foreheads and then streaming our game play live over the Internet.
We might play naked. You need a hook to keep people viewing.
As for the cats, we sat them down for a family meeting and explained to them that they’ll be seeing more of us now.
BUT.
They cannot expect us to spend an inordinate amount of time petting them, playing with them, or checking to make sure their food trough is full.
We might need to get a live-in assistant.
We have game play to deal with. We’re professionals, you know. You can’t rack up points and coins just lookin’ at the screen.
You have to forego all of your daily chores like cleaning, laundry and why do we have to shower every day?
All of it takes away from game play.
This blog? Jury’s still out on that. While writing this post, I played six games of Solitaire Blitz.
It’s my morphine drip and I pressed the button.
The button ……
The button ……
The button ……
Stumble it!

It’s disturbing how addicted I’ve become. And I only get 45 minutes a day on my desktop at work during lunch. I can’t function on a laptop at home. It just doesn’t work out. I might need to buy a desktop just for gameplay. Or they need to release Solitaire Blitz for the iPad.

So far, my Mommeh hasn’t played any games on Facebook. I think she just cannot figure out how to do it!

I can honestly say I’m not addicted or even vaguely interested. Oh, I know friends/family that are, to put it mildly, obsessed.
And, in my ripe old age, I’ve played game, both on and off-line that I really enjoyed. For a while.
Then I’m done. So far, there is NOTHING on facebook, not even games, that tempt me.
Manga on-line, however, I’m completely hooked.

I wish I could sympathize but I don’t play games on FB either…

Okay i may not be addicted to games but could i go a whole weekend without my dear friend Laptop. It is only because if i didn’t spend time with them they would think i didn’t love them any more, would think i didn’t want them any more and that really wouldn’t be fair on them.

I avoid Facebook games because I’m pretty sure if I started playing them, I’d never stop. And I’d apply for that live-in assistant job, but I’m already the live-in assistant to my two cats.

Games are addicting but I don’t play on Facebook. I play on pogo.com–there are so many different ones to pick from AND some of them you can even chat while you play with other people. Video games aren’t just for kids anymore! Have fun!

Kelly — Disturbing? You better believe it. I freaked out this morning when I found all my points and coins were reset overnight inexplicably! I not only need rehab, I need therapy now. Please don’t play on the iPad, you’ll kill my score.
Jaffer — Indeed. I haven’t been this addicted to a game since Mario Brothers.
Daisy the Curly Cat — She’s lucky. Tell her not to start. Rehab is expensive.
Stephanie Barr — I think I remember Manga. I used to play Majong (sp?) for a while. Liked that. This Solitaire thing, though. OMG. Hours. Hours.
Grace — Good for you. Do. Not. Start.
Beverley — Oh, me too. We had no Internet access once for like 8 hours and I thought I would die.
Laura — And you’d be right. If we ever had to interview for a cat assistant, there’s a looooong list of requirements. These cats have so many demands, I can’t count them all.
Lee — Glad you liked it! And no, not quitting :,)
Karen — Nope, and they’re not just for guys any more. I know a lot of women are extreme gamers. Geesh. What did we do before computer games?

The publicist does not play these games either. But she is spending too much time with little Jim the goat and that is disturbing

I have yet to play even one game on facebook. I’m afraid to start because I may have an addictive personality and then I’d be out on the corner having to swing my pearls to get money to support my internet connection issues.

Gosh, I hesitate to even write a comment, for fear that you’ll lose time from your precious and necessary game playing to read it! But hey, if you can find a way to get paid to play FB games naked, fantastic! After all, that’s the American Dream, right?

I would sympathize, but I discovered an even bigger rush– the ‘Delete App’ button. I’ve been gleefully blowing up villages, castles, friends and the words that accompany them…I think I retained Gardens of Time because it appeals to that same part of my brain that peels stickers off of things and straightens up displays in stores. And even that I only play occasionally because my laptop speed prohibits very high scores. I’ve been doing a lot of that reading thing everyone is talking about, instead.

I’m happy to announce that, I don’t have an addiction to FB games. I do play them, but I get bored quickly, which means I usually only play a few games at a time. I’d like to have Solitaire Blitz on the iPad though. Games play much smoother. All my high bejeweled Blitz score are from my iPad 🙂
There is one game that I don’t get too bored with. I’ve played ‘The Sims Social’ daily for some months now. It appeals to the designer in me 🙂
Please feed your kitties though 😉

Pricilla — So what’s Little Jim got that you don’t have? This calls for a sit-in.
Linda Medrano — And somehow I have no doubt you’d find supporters for anything you crave!
Kooz — With the allocation of energy at the slow rate it is, I might be quitting. But not yet. I’m still addicted.
D. Duplessis — And you’d be right. I had to come over here to answer comments while I wait for my energy to replenish. Not kidding. It’s bad.
Shieldmaiden — It sounds like you have a built-in regulator. That’s good. I need something to take me away from this freaking game. Uh, like, um. Blogging?
Babs — I’m always amazed at the high scores people get on Bejeweled playing on their smaller devices. I feel like I need a giant screen and a real mouse to use. Thanks for giving me Solitaire energy. You’re part of the problem now.
meleah rebeccah — Glad you can stand up and admit it. I’m sort of surprised there aren’t more commenters here who are addicted as we are. What’s their problem?
sharkbytes — Good for you. Seriously, it’s good for you.
Laura — Ha! See? It’s not such a crazy idea. Or is it?

I play Words with Friends, but I am not very good at it so I just end up getting frustrated and not addicted. I do admit to having about 10 games going at one time–maybe I really am addicted. I dunno.
Lately, the pond is calling me. The frogs are coming and going and I’m addicted to figuring that out. Do I still have 4 frogs? Or only 1 who is a bully and scaring the others off? What killed the big frog? Do I get more tadpoles? Or just wait to see if I get frog naturally?
See? That’s consuming me. For that reason alone, I think I need help. Serious help. But the good thing is–I don’t need to spell fantastic words while I’m doing it. 🙂

Well, being someone who is never on FB (in fact, I’m actually deleting my account in two weeks), I’ve not heard of these games. Yet, I did click over on the link you shared and saw Solitaire Blitz, which perked me up real fast. I adore anything SOLITAIRE! I play it at least 5-6 times a day on my computer. And thank god I don’t have a cell phone with apps. because I would be playing it all day at work!

For what it’s worth: What you’re suggesting here sounds a lot like the philosopher Nozick’s Experience Machine thought experiment. Except, of course, that your machine is powered by Facebook…
Nozick didn’t think this was a hot idea. His reasons against plugging into the machine (according to Wiki):
1) We want to do certain things, and not just have the experience of doing them
2) We want to be a certain sort of person “Someone floating in a tank is an indeterminate blob.” (Nozick, 43)
3) Plugging into an experience machine limits us to a man-made reality “There is no actual contact with any deeper reality, though the experience of it can be simulated.” (Nozick, 43)
Perhaps he should have added something about the home cats being annyoed by the prospect of 24-hour company…

That’s funny. My co-worker just wrote on FB last week, “Friends and Family. I am NOT farming anymore. Please keep that in mind.” Now, imagine that being said 50 years ago. The girl would NOT BE FARMING. Quite a bit different from what it means today!

Nanny Goats — I hear ya, sister. I’m happy I’m off Bejeweled, but it really doesn’t matter because Solitaire took its place and I’m still screwed.
MAFW — THANK YOU for reminding me of that! You’re right! I’m capable of quitting something. Anything. Just not Solitaire.
New Jersey Memories — And it’s funny to me that I’ve latched onto a game that was probably one of the first PC games ever, like in 1990. You always go back to the ones you love.
lin — I’ve heard so much about Word With Friends, but I tried once and gave up immediately. It didn’t do anything for me. Or maybe it was the pressure! Yeah, stick with frogs. At least you’re outside.
Ron — You’re a smart man, Ron. I’ve never gotten into games on my iTouch, thankfully. I’d always be running out of battery power and then wouldn’t have energy when I needed it most.
FPhF — “indeterminate blob.” Yep, that’s me. Also, don’t get so deep here. My brain can’t handle it. You know, all that mindless Solitaire.
Katherine — Har. I’ve seen other people announce their departure from different games or even Facebook, like today. Someone said she can only be found on Twitter now. It’s nice to see people getting back to real life now and then. Not me. Just some people.
