Identity Theft Made Easy
computing, work October 11th, 2013This afternoon I went down to the computer labs in my building at work to hang up signs about National Cyber Security Awareness Month. (Huh. How ‘bout that. A government site that’s still running….)
While I stood arranging things, I noticed a student sitting at a computer, talking on her cell phone. She was obviously giving information about some kind of account she needed to verify.
I know this because she blurted out all kinds of personal information, including her social security number, within earshot of me and all the other people present in the lab.
This, while I was putting up signs about safeguarding your data and protecting your identity online.
I laughed to myself when she spelled her name and for each letter, gave a word that started with each letter. “A as in apple. R as in rover. K as in…. K as in…. K as in….”
I wanted to scream out “kangaroo!!!!!!” to help her along, but she eventually thought of a word that started with K, the poor thing.
Then I wanted to tell her “You should probably take your conversation somewhere private because we can all steal your identity based on the information you gave out so far.”
But then she gave the person on the phone her birthdate.
Something something 1994.
I have underwear older than her.
This disturbed me, so I mentally punched her in the face and left her to give out all the rest of her personal information for those still in the lab.
I just don’t understand how a student smart enough to get into the university where I work can be so utterly careless when it comes to keeping her privacy.
Although….. if I stayed long enough, I might have gotten a credit card number. I did have some shopping to do.
Stumble it!

Kathy, you wouldn’t believe (ok, maybe you would) the number of students who click on links in spam emails, get hacked, and subsequently get their school email account locked by ITS. Then they have to do the slither of shame to the ITS helpdesk and get their password reset… AFTER the manager of User Services gives them a lecture. *I* don’t believe the number of faculty and staff who do the same thing! They get to do the slither of shame, too.
And ITS sends out emails (that obviously don’t get read) several times a semester telling people NOT to click on links.
So… yeah. Even smart people are stupid.

I am always amazed at how careless people are with their personal information. What they post on Facebook at times, leaves me speechless.

She’ll learn and perhaps, maybe, hopefully teach one of her friends.

To write down all that information that one would hear would take effort and concentration. Easier to just install a credit card skimmer on the gas station fuel pump.

The very young and the very old seem to be the most easily scammed. Why is that? We do a damned poor job of teaching the young and older people (according to a study done in a Chinese opium den about 30 minutes ago)have lost a perception we once had that was generated by a warm part of the brain. It has grown cold on us. We no longer recognize when we are being scammed. I just glad I still know a crooked SOB when I see one but I am a little perplexed about the “parts of the brain” bit. I did not know my brain was large enough to have different parts. I thought it was like a lump of coal.

I love punching people in the face in my mind. They all deserve it. Every one.

Oh my. I can’t believe that student was dumb enough to blurt out such personal information over the phone, and loud enough for everyone to hear. That’s crazy!
And if it makes you feel any better, I also have underwear older than her.

I laughed so hard at the “k for kangaroo.” Personally, I like throwing out things like “S as in Satan” (usually on the phone with Judge’s secretaries) just to see if they notice.
I have new found enthusiasm for keeping my personal information to myself, since apparently not even the social security administration can handle keeping me in the system…

Whenever I have to spell my last name, I always say “Z” as in zebra. I tend to use animals rather than people names when spelling. This is a funny post–I’m surprised you didn’t stop her. I hope you at least made sure she saw your sign!
