Maybe Poke It With a Stick?
Stupid things I do, suburbia June 1st, 2014I had no intention of walking ten miles today, I really didn’t. In fact, when I went to bed last night, it was with such a creaky body I figured I would spend all of today on the couch. Instead, I woke up feeling like my whole body had been replaced with one that actually works.
When that happens, you take every advantage of it, especially since I’ve suffered from some recurring, frustrating knee pain lately. Pain that’s kept me from doing any kind of meaningful exercise. Since I had zero pain today, I set out to do one or two miles. Which turned into four, which turned into six and then eight and then a glorious ten!
Now I’m not gonna lie. It wasn’t without its pains. While I was delighted the knees felt amazing for all ten miles, I can’t say as much for my hips. I took breaks along the way, stopping back home twice to hydrate, stretch and sit a bit.
Back out on the circuit, during mile eight, I needed to stretch and relax some more. I sat under a tree for five minutes with a shit-eating grin on my face. I just couldn’t believe I was doing this. Ten miles ain’t nothin’ to sneeze at and I was feeling kind of awesome.
But the last two miles had something to say about that. Around mile 9, I had to park my butt on a curb and engage in a total body stretch, which is really something that ought to take place in the privacy of your own home. I decided to ignore how this probably looked to people driving by.
After I was done contorting myself on the curb, I decided to take a rare opportunity to lay back on some cool, luxurious grass and simply watch the clouds roll by. Suddenly, I was five years old again and enjoyed the blissful downtime, stopping to think, to daydream and just chill, all with a welcome breeze passing over me.
Lying there, with a relaxed body and mind, I shut my eyes and listened to my jams on my iPod. I got into a nice little zen state and I didn’t move a muscle. I probably could have fallen asleep there.
Until.
Until my zoned out space was abruptly interrupted by a neighbor woman calling out to me over and over “Ma’am? Ma’am? Are you OK?” I hadn’t heard her at first because of the music in my ears. But when I did, I opened my eyes to a worried-looking woman a few feet away.
“You weren’t moving. I thought maybe something was wrong,” she said. And by “wrong,” I think she meant “dead.”
So, word of advice. If you’re going to be a weekend warrior and need to park yourself in the middle of someone’s lawn, move a body part every now and then because you kind of look like a corpse otherwise.
Death tends to frighten people.
Stumble it!

Wowie! That’s fantastic! I recommend a long soak in a tub and if you have a foam roller, get on it.
Hee Hee. Laying on a neighbor’s lawn.

Ten miles! Wow! That’s serious walking. Well done you. If I saw anybody laying on the ground I would be extremely concerned. We don’t do that in England, unless we are in a park or our own back garden. British reserve and all that 😉
Mo and I did some speed walking to music the other day and I must admit it feels good to pace it out to a great beat.

Funny how you felt so alive and yet she thought you might be dead or dying. Aging sucks. But 10 miles is impressive.

Reforming Geek — Well, I did get a hot shower, which felt great. I’m telling you, that grass I laid on was so comfortable, like a rug! I could have slept there. Or died. One or the other.
Babs — That’s so funny about the Brits not considering lying down any ‘ol place. I guess we really shouldn’t do it here either. Hee. But you reminded me of our first trip to Paris. The last day, Dave and I went walking in a park and saw tons of Parisians having picnics on the grass, and some were dressed in their work clothes. I thought how strange to be dressed so nicely for being on grass. But it was right out of a painting. I admired them for doing it. p.s. Glad you and Mo got out for some good hard walking. I couldn’t have done mine without music.
The Florida Furkids — Thank you! I promise next time I’ll try to find a bench like a normal person. I think there may be one along my path. Not sure, they might have removed it. I don’t recall seeing it.
Bobbie — Aw, thanks!
MikeWJ — Har. And I didn’t really know what to say to her except “I’m taking a rest.” Though I’m sure I looked strange, just lying there on the side of the road. At least I wasn’t in the road. I’m feeling pretty good right now. Thought I’d be way more sore than this.

Bwhahahahaha! Kathy, that made me howl out loud! I could just picture your neighbor tentatively walking up to you with her cell phone in her hand and her fingers getting ready to press 911.
And way to go on walking 10 miles, girl. That’s AWESOME! Wasn’t today beautiful? I was outside practically all afternoon enjoying it. The temperature was perfect, wasn’t it? And that gorgeous breeze, hu? I hope it stays like this all week.

Love it. Keep walking. Keep writing.
And next time your blissful rest is interrupted, might I recommend jumping up and breaking out into a song and dance number–perhaps, ‘Happy’.

A friend of mine was just saying the other day that she was lying on the side of the road with her very fancy camera taking pictures and several people, only seeing a lady lying on the side of the road and not the fancy camera, pulled over to make sure she was OK. Even when she showed them the camera a few acted like they didn’t quite believe her. I think once the concern dumps into your bloodstream you can’t help it!

Well, now I’m jealous. I love that feeling of relaxation after exercise, but I’ve never achieved a high enough degree of relaxation for anyone to mistake me for dead.

Ron — I suppose I should be happy she didn’t call 911 from her house. At least she checked with me first. Wouldn’t have been fun trying to explain to EMTs that I was fine and “you gotta let me finish the last mile. I’m on a mission.” The day was so perfect and I realized the next day I got a little sunburned. Yea!
Tina — I wish the weather forecast was better this week. I do want to keep walking at lunch, but i hate the heat and there’s a threat of rain. I love that “Happy” song. Might have to add it to my playlist.
Kim — That’s funny! But it’s also comforting to know that neighbors are always on a neighborhood watch for suspicious-looking walkers and photogs. Hee.
Laura — Well, I guess it was all about context. If I’d been in my own back yard, not dead. Someone else’s? Maybe dead.

Well done! Must have given the neighbour a bit of a scare!

Of course death frightens people – have you seen the mess a decomposing body leaves behind. Why, we had one just the other day… ok, perhaps I’ve said too much already.
I love going for long walks, but preferably where there are no curbs or people.

How great you made it 10 miles. I would love to walk even half of that. of course I think I manage that around the house, cause at the end of the day I am ready for the drink and my bones are aching. But I should try your method sound like something doable.
