I Would Make a Lousy Judge
contests January 15th, 2009Don’t ever let me judge a contest of any kind. Yesterday’s What’s That Wednesday drew three guesses that were so close to being correct that I’ve decided to award prizes to all of them. Hell, if I could afford it, you’d all win!
The object pictured was the top of a salt grinder.
Here’s how the winning answers came in:
Michelle of Hartz Design guessed it was a pepper grinder. Got the grinder right, wrong seasoning.
Kev at Special Kind of Stupid guessed it was a salt shaker. Got the right seasoning, wrong container.
Laurelei of Maybe It’s Me guessed exactly right that it’s a salt grinder.
I’ll contact all of you shortly to see what prize you’d like. Since none of you use Entrecard, you can pick either a Junk Drawer magnet or the mystery prize, which may or may not be a goat.
For this contest, I’m also awarding a prize to Ken of Ken Armstrong Writing Stuff because I thought he had the best wrong answer: a spool on a VHS tape.
Thanks to everyone who played!
Stumble it!

Way to go, folks. I never get these right, but I always enjoy seeing what they turn out to be.
Thanks, Kathy, for testing our minds a little! π

Really? I get a prize for being ‘Best Wrong Person’? I could take this category to The Academy Awards (c) and win!!
Thanks. I would dearly love a fridge magnet but that gets into postage and expensive things so really the lovely link from your lovely blog is ample prize for my slovenly attempt.

You certainly are generous. Three winners!

Come on now, Kathy. Only Laurelei got the right answer. This is an open and shut case.

I think these images are getting a bit to obscure. Many people I know don’t even know what Salt Grinders are. They think that the Morton Salt people just dig up those round boxes of salt from the ground like turnips.

hi Kathy,
Crappity crap crap!
I just got the email about the contest, clicked through, and saw that it was too late to even guess!
And I was sure it was a button on the button-fly of a pair of knock-off 501 blue jeans. Maybe it’s good that I didn’t guess… π
We have a salt grinder in the kitchen. I guess I don’t use much salt because I would never have thought of that. Of course we also have a paper towel rack almost identical to yours, and I never got that either… so maybe I just don’t pay much attention…

PS. I wonder if this comment will be moderated for the word c*r*a*p… it just sounds so good the way you said it.

LOL I knew it looked familiar. I have the same McCormick Sea Salt Grinder. (My grandma is on a low-sodium diet, and we use sea salt when we HAVE to use salt – yes, we should use No-Salt, but that stuff is really gross.)

dizzblnd — Don’t worry, there’ll be more. Oh, and little hint. I don’t own a blender.
kristin — I’ll email you shortly.
Data Entry Services — Don’t worry. My husband didn’t get it either. I pointed it out to him when he salted his dinner last night.
Jenn Thorson — I agree! Half the fun of this is seeing what others see in the picture.
Ken Armstrong — Yes you do! I was flabbergasted at how much it looked like a VHS tape spool. Look for an email from me tonight.
doublebanker — Sea salt is typically not ground already. Gotta sweat for it. Incidentally, I saw this same salt container at lunch in a restaurant today. It’s becoming more common I think.
Sherry at EX Marks the Spot — It really is! And I would have felt bad if anyone objected on a technicality. This is the first time there was some discrepancy with the answers. Hopefully there won’t be any confusion in the future.
Father Muskrat — Oh, don’t jinx me. I’m kinda hoping I don’t get picked for a jury in March. If I do get picked, I just hope it’s not a murder trial or something of that magnitude.
cardiogirl — I know, but the others guessed so close. Isn’t “close” good enough? Come on, judgie!
Anne — Everyone should have a goat. I was checking out some online and they’re really cute. I might have to buy a gaggle of them. What exactly do you call a group of goats?
kev — I can read your mind.
JD at I Do Things — Hey, don’t be surprised if you find a real one in your backyard. You’ll feed it, right?
Marlene — I found the exact same grinder on the table where I went to lunch today. I think grinding is all the rage now.
Lee — Hey, you already have the best Junk Drawer item! Greedy, aren’t we? Hey, thanks for the nice write-up today about the mug. Bartering is fun!
Bruce — Don’t they?
Sniffie and the Florida Furkids — I don’t know. Do cats and goats get along well? Don’t goats eat anything. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Laurelei — Yeah, what is No Salt anyway? I mostly use regular salt because the ground salt still winds up a little too chunky for me. I think sea salt is supposed to be healthier in some way.
Matt Oxley — Sorry you missed it! I know it’s tough for everyone to get their guesses in on time, depending on when you visit the blog. But this is an ongoing series, so maybe you’ll stumble through the door at the right time in the future!

Trade Show Guru Steve — Ha! Your comment did show up in moderated comments, which is weird. I can’t imagine ‘crap’ qualifies. I’m sorry you were too late to guess. I think you should make Junk Drawer your browser home page, then you won’t miss a thing. That’s not too much to ask, is it?
meleah rebeccah — I think they all deserved to win. Hopefully next time there won’t be any discrepancies and I won’t have to hold a whole awards show.
Lee — I can see us doing it again. Eventually I want to have a Tar Heels photo gallery in my house.
Joe — Seriously. Who doesn’t want a goat? BLEAT!
Regan — No, no! Salt grinder. That fine point is what got me into this mess.
Pearl — This took me off-guard. I’ve been running these contests for a while now and never had this problem before. And I hope I never do again. It confuses my wee brain.
Babs beetle — I keep forgetting the objects I pick should be universal! But that may involve research and I’m too lazy for that.
Pricilla — Yes! And tear its way out of the box. I think the UPS man would be a little shocked to find a goat in the truck, eating through everyone’s packages. Work hazard.
choopixie — Maybe one day I’ll pick a random post and send everyone who comments a magnet. Wouldn’t that be something?
January 16th, 2009 at 7:34 am

January 16th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Jenny — I know, it’s all wrong! But so right! Kev would treat a real goat right and not feed it dirty socks or anything. I’m sure of it.
A Bay Horse — It leapt right out at me as soon as I read his entry.
HeatherHere — You never know. I’m intrigued by what others see in these pictures. This particular contest turned out to be quite a mess, didn’t it?
PaulsHealthBlog — Thank you! Have a good weekend yourself. I hope you’re in a part of the country where it’s above two degrees.
Jay — Depends. It’s the top of the bottle, but you do turn it upside DOWN to use it. Hmmmm…
Lauren — You know I do that on purpose, right? It’s the one time where I’m glad my brand spankin’ new camera sucks.
choopixie — And expensive.
